Caring for your Marble Showers

Marble Shower After Polishing

Perfectly Polished Marble Shower

This evening I met with a client that had a beautiful marble shower. It was only two years old though and had signs of soap scum and minerals on the surface but overall it was in good shape. I explained to my customer that it was too soon to need professional help but we settled on a price to restore the surface so she could start fresh with the correct maintenance procedures and hopefully get many years of life before needing my services again. After we complete the service her marble will never look so good!

When caring for your marble shower it is important to remember a few simple rules.

  1. Water is the enemy of marble, especially polished marble. Water carries soap and other particulates into the stone and dries leaving them behind to become soap scum. The resulting moisture left behind by water can allow mold and mildew to grow on the surface and weaken the sealer.
  2. Bar soaps cost you money, and lots of it. When you use bar soap in your marble shower you are converting a solid to a liquid during your scrubbing then allowing it to convert back again to a solid on your shower walls. Using bar soap without removal, after your shower, will hasten the need for professional services.
  3. Squeegees save you money. After each shower, you should squeegee the walls and glass. This practice will prevent nasty hard water stains from occurring over time and will save you money by reducing the need for professional services.

Tools to have on hand (Always have a squeegee on hand for daily squeegeeing):

  1. Nylon Handle Brush
  2. Small nylon grout brush
  3. EasyOxy
  4. MB3 Soap Film Remover
  5. MB9 Mildew Remover
  6. StoneScrub
  7. Diluted Bleach – 4oz to a 32oz squirt bottle of water (not for polished surfaces)
  8. Microfiber towels
  9. Appropriate Safety Gear

Evaluate Surfaces to begin maintenance:

  1. Check all grout areas especially in areas subject to intense exposure to water. The perimeter grout should be intact. If you have gaps or missing grout repair it as soon as possible to avoid water damage. Allow grout repaired areas to cure for a minimum of 7 days (optimum 14) prior to use.
  2. Look closely at the surface for water absorption. If you have dark tiles that once were light, especially in high water exposure areas, it is time to apply a sealer. It is best to allow drying time before sealing. Drying can be help along with heating and dehumidifying methods. (Allow sealed areas to cure for a minimum of 2 days (Optimum 5) prior to use.
  3. Evaluate the surface for mold or mildew. Mold and Mildew is not always visible so look carefully. Although some showers may need more frequent treatment, most showers will need a biyearly treatment to keep your shower mold free.

Daily Maintenance:

  1. Squeegee walls and glass after each shower.
  2. Dry corners and edges to remove water. This will help prevent mold.
  3. Leave the shower door open and if possible and window open to allow the surface to dry.

Weekly or Biweekly Maintenance:

  1. Spray the each wall with EasyOxy as necessary and buff clean with Microfiber cloth.
  2. Use EasyOxy on soap dish, shower seat, and any other horizontal surface. It may be necessary to allow a few minutes dwell time to break down soap scum if you have not yet made the transmission to liquid soap.
  3. Use EasyOxy on the glass and metal with a clean microfiber. If your glass has been treated with Wipe NSeal you should not have any mineral deposits to remove. Mineral deposits can be removed by rubbing liberally with StoneScrub. StoneScrub Residue can be removed with EasyOxy.

Biyearly or Every Six Months:

  1. Use MB3 Soap Film Remover to insure that you have fully removed soap scum. If you have made the transmission to liquid soap and have been squeegeeing the walls religiously, this step will be very easy or possibly unnecessary.
  2. Use MB9 Mildew Remover to kill and remove any living mold or mildew. If you have been using EasyOxy Cleaner on your weekly or biweekly cleaning, have been squeegeeing the walls religiously, and have completed the previous step, this step will be very easy or possibly unnecessary.
  3. Check all grout areas especially in areas subject to intense exposure to water. The perimeter grout should be intact. If you have gaps or missing grout repair it as soon as possible to avoid water damage. Allow grout repaired areas to cure for a minimum of 7 days (optimum 14) prior to use.

Testimonials

  • I am so happy with the service provided by Steve and Sureshine. I had some marble floors and a shower that were in desperate need of some TLC. I called for an estimate, and Summer was very pleasant to talk to and scheduled an estimate within a couple days. Steve came out to do the estimate. He was very professional while being super friendly at the same time. The estimate was a better price than the other quotes I'd gotten, and they had time in the schedule to get it done soon, so I scheduled the appt. On to the actual work. I was amazed. Literally. I guess when you live with something so long you get used to it.  I could not believe how good my bathroom looked when they were done.  I looked brand new again. So shiny. It was all polished up, the grout cleaned, and sealed. I really was blown away. But even better, the crew had shown up on time, finished the work (beautifully) in the time estimated, and best of all, the left the place so clean.  I've had other contractors in my home, and they weren't the tidiest.  The Sureshine crew left the place immaculate. They protected my hardwood floors that meet up with the marble floor, and the baseboards, and completely cleaned up. Steve checked on the job when it was done, and had the crew put a little more work in removing a bit of product residue in one corner that I hadn't even noticed. Basically I couldn't be happier with the whole experience. Thanks Steve! I'll definitely be using you again when we need more work done.

  • When we bought our house we were looking for someone to bring our stone back to life, it was dull, scratched and had no life. We contacted sureshine to come out and give us an estimate, we spoke with the office and they were very helpful determining what services we needed and scheduled a bid. Steve came out and ran through the project in great detail, we ended up restoring our travertine entry to a high shine, grout staining and sealing the stone. In addition to the entry we had them clean, caulk and seal the ceramic showers and vanities. We would highly recommend sureshines services they were very easy to deal with and exceeded our expectations. Thank you Becky Puma
